Dr. John F. Bayley passed away on July 3. He was a good friend and mentor.
 
Here is a short list of some of his chess accomplishments:
 

• Tried to bring the US Championship to Philadelphia
• Re-starting the Greater Philadelphia Open Championship
• Helped re-start the Greater Philadelphia Junior Invitational
• Helped me start the Dan Heisman Chess Support Fund at The Philadelphia Foundation (I think I will make a donation in his name via

• Played in numerous World Opens, Main Line Chess Club (MLCC) Club Championships
• President of the Main Line Chess Club for about 12 years
• Moved the MLCC to Waverly when we kept being kicked out of the library at 10 PM
• Besides being a master wood crafter, made chess boxes, chess sets, and chess boards for many. For example, he made a custom chess board for me from exotic wood which is probably unique in the world  He made a chess box to hold chess equipment for son Delen.
• I have even noted some of my amateur misconceptions after John. There are certain errors he made which I use when I am teaching.  Here is a well-used position where John was White and his opponent (another Main Line Chess Club player, at the Holly Heisman Memorial fundraiser chess tournament) played 1…Qe2 FEN r2r2k1/pp3pp1/2p2b1p/4p2q/4Q3/2P1P2b/PP3PNP/R1B1R2K b KQkq - 0 1
